Pneumonectomy in India

Pneumonectomy – Detailed Description

Pneumonectomy is a major surgical procedure performed to remove an entire lung. It is commonly recommended for patients diagnosed with advanced or centrally located lung cancer, severe lung damage, serious infections, or other complex conditions affecting the lungs.

The main goal of pneumonectomy is to remove the diseased lung tissue, eliminate cancerous growth when possible, prevent further complications, and improve the patient's overall health. This surgery is generally considered when removing only a portion of the lung is not sufficient to treat the underlying condition.

Before surgery, doctors perform several diagnostic tests, including chest X-rays, CT scans, PET scans, bronchoscopy, lung function tests, blood tests, and sometimes a biopsy. These examinations help determine the extent of the disease and evaluate whether the remaining lung can provide enough breathing capacity after surgery.

During the procedure, the patient is given general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the chest and carefully separates the affected lung from the surrounding blood vessels, airways, and tissues. The entire lung is then removed, and the remaining structures are carefully closed.

Pneumonectomy is generally performed through traditional open chest surgery, although selected cases may be managed using specialized minimally invasive techniques.

Types of Pneumonectomy

  • Standard Pneumonectomy: Removes the entire affected lung.

  • Extrapleural Pneumonectomy: Removes the lung along with the pleura and, in selected cases, parts of the diaphragm and pericardium. It may be considered for certain cancers involving the chest lining.

  • Completion Pneumonectomy: Removes the remaining lung tissue after a previous lung resection.

Benefits of Pneumonectomy

  • Removes the entire lung affected by serious disease.

  • Helps treat selected cases of advanced or centrally located lung cancer.

  • Removes extensive cancerous or damaged lung tissue.

  • May prevent further complications caused by severe lung disease.

  • Can improve disease control in carefully selected patients.

  • Provides tissue samples for detailed pathological examination.

Recovery After Surgery

Recovery after pneumonectomy requires careful medical monitoring because the patient must adjust to breathing with one lung. Patients generally stay in the hospital for several days or longer, depending on their condition.

After surgery, doctors monitor breathing, oxygen levels, heart function, and overall recovery. Patients may experience chest discomfort, fatigue, shortness of breath, and reduced physical stamina.

Pulmonary rehabilitation, breathing exercises, prescribed medication, and gradual physical activity can help improve recovery. Patients are also advised to attend regular follow-up appointments and follow their doctor's instructions regarding daily activities.

Possible Risks and Complications

  • Breathing difficulties or reduced lung capacity.

  • Pneumonia or other respiratory infections.

  • Bleeding or blood clots.

  • Heart-related complications.

  • Infection at the surgical site.

  • Fluid accumulation or other complications in the chest cavity.

Additional Treatment

Depending on the underlying disease and pathology results, patients with lung cancer may require additional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy. Regular follow-up examinations help monitor recovery and detect possible cancer recurrence.

Pneumonectomy is an important but major surgical treatment for selected patients with serious lung conditions, particularly certain types of lung cancer. Careful patient evaluation, experienced surgical care, pulmonary rehabilitation, and regular medical follow-up play an important role in achieving better treatment outcomes.
